How to Program an NFC Business Card: Step by Step

Programming an NFC business card sounds technical. It isn't. With the right app, the actual write takes less than a second. The longer part is setting up your profile, and that takes about 3 minutes.

Here's the full process from start to finish.

What you'll need

• A smartphone with NFC (any iPhone 7 or later, or most Android phones from 2013 onwards)
• A writable NFC tag: an NFC business card, ring, sticker, or keychain. Any NTAG213, NTAG215, or NTAG216 chip works.
• A Tappa account (free)
• The Tappa app (available on the App Store and Google Play)

Step 1: Create your Tappa profile

Go to tappa.me and sign up with your email or Google account. Your account is created instantly.

You'll be walked through an onboarding flow where you can add:

• Your name and profile photo
• Job title and company
• Phone number and email
• Website URL
• Social links (LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook)

You don't have to fill in everything right now. You can update your profile at any time. What matters is that your profile exists before you program the card.

Once you save your profile, it's live at tappa.me/yourname. This is the URL that will be written to your NFC card.

Step 2: Get an NFC card

You need a physical NFC tag to write to. Tappa works with any standard NFC card. You don't need to buy from a specific brand.

Options to consider:

• PVC NFC business cards: credit card sized, available from Jumia, Jiji, or specialist suppliers for ₦500–₦2,500 each. Standard NTAG213 chips work fine.
• Metal NFC cards: more premium feel, typically ₦3,000–₦8,000 each.
• NFC rings: good if you're in environments where pulling out a card isn't convenient.
• NFC stickers: adhesive tags you can stick to your phone case, laptop, or notebook.

For most people starting out, a pack of plain PVC NFC cards is the easiest and cheapest option.

Step 3: Download the Tappa app

The Tappa app is where you manage your devices, track who tapped your card, view analytics, and program NFC items. Download it from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android), sign in with your Tappa account, and you're ready to go.

Step 4: Open the Tappa app and add a device

Tap "Add Device" in the dashboard.

Give your device a name (something like "Main Card", "Metal Card", or "Ring") so you can identify it in your analytics later. Then select what you want to write to the card: your Tappa profile link.

Step 5: Write to the NFC card

When prompted, hold your phone to the NFC card. On iPhone, hold the top of your phone over the card. On Android, hold the back of your phone (usually the middle area) over the card.

The write completes in under a second. The app will confirm when it's done.

That's it. Your card is programmed.

Test your card

Before you start using your card at events, test it with your own phone:

1. On iPhone: bring the card close to the top of the phone. A notification should appear at the top of the screen. Tap it to open your profile.
2. On Android: bring the card close to the back of the phone. Your profile should open in the browser automatically (or a notification appears, depending on settings).

If it doesn't work, check that NFC is enabled in your phone's settings, and try positioning the card slightly differently. The NFC antenna position varies slightly between phone models.

Can you reprogram an NFC card?

Yes. You can overwrite an NFC tag as many times as you like, unless it has been locked. Tappa does not lock tags by default, so your card stays reprogrammable. If you want to lock a card so it can never be overwritten, you can do that from the app. This is useful if you want to change what the card links to, for example if you start using a different profile.

Do you need to reprogram when you update your profile?

No, in most cases. The NFC card stores a URL: your tappa.me profile link. When you update your profile (new phone number, new job title, new photo), the profile at that URL updates, but the URL itself stays the same. So all your cards continue to work without any reprinting or reprogramming.

The one exception is if you change your username. Your profile URL is based on your username, so a username change means the old URL on your cards will no longer work. In that case you'll need to reprogram your cards with the new link.

Can you program multiple cards?

Yes. You can program as many NFC cards, rings, and stickers as you want. Each one appears as a separate device in your Tappa dashboard, with its own tap count so you can see which one gets used most.
